CLARION, Pa. -- Sophomore right-hander Candice Nase
(Telford/Souderton HS) tossed a one-hit shutout Saturday
afternoon to lead Slippery Rock University to a 1-0 win over
hosting Clarion University in the first game of a Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference-Western Division softball
doubleheader.
Clarion scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of
the second game to eke out a 7-6 win.
The split gave SRU an 8-12 overall record and a 1-5 PSAC-West
mark.
Junior second baseman Jesse Gump (Greensburg/Hempfield
HS) had an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning to
account for the only run in the first game. She was one of six Rock
players who had one hit each in the contest.
Sophomore third baseman Alicia Caranese
(Greensburg/Greensburg Central Catholic HS) had two hits
and two RBIs in the second game, while senior designated hitter
Beth Rebholz (Pittsburgh/Shaler HS) was 3-for-3 with
a double and one RBI.
Nase struck out nine and walked four en route to evening her record
at 3-3.
Freshman right-hander Shannon Tagliaferri
(Williamsport/Loyalsock Township HS) was tagged with the
loss in the second game. She allowed three runs (two earned) on two
hits, struck out one and walked four in two innings of relief
work.
Rock starter Laura Campbell (fr., Connellsville/Geibel
Catholic HS) allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits,
struck out three and walked four in the first four innings.
The Rock returns to action Tuesday when it will travel to Lock
Haven for a 3 p.m. PSAC-West doubleheader.
