ROCK HARDBALLERS SPLIT WITH INDIANA, PA.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Senior second baseman Alan Reichl (Pittsburgh/Montour HS) smacked a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning Saturday afternoon to lead Slippery Rock University to a 5-1 win over visiting Indiana U. of Pa. and a split in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division baseball action at Jack Critchfield Park.

Reichl’s home run was his sixth of the season. He also had a double in the second game.

Indiana’s Anthony Zambotti (7-0) held SRU to only three hits in the first game.

The Rock is now 26-7 overall and 8-2 in PSAC-West action, the latter mark good for first place.

Indiana is 13-14 overall, 5-5 in PSAC-West action.

Kris Firestone had a pair of hits to lead Indiana’s seven-hit attack in the opening game.

Senior center fielder Joe Neidrick (Osceola Mills/Phillipsburg-Osceola HS) had a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning to account for SRU’s only runs.

Sophomore right-hander John Katish (Deer Lakes/Deer Lakes HS) was the losing pitcher in the first game. He fell to 4-2 on the year after he allowed three earned runs on seven hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Junior shortstop Nathan Statzer (Harmony/Seneca Valley HS), senior first baseman Brandon Stewart (New Kensington/Plum HS) and sophomore designated hitter Bill Wolfe (Franklin/Franklin HS) had three hits each for SRU in the second game to lead a 15-hit Rock attack.

Statzer had a double and an RBI, while Wolfe had an RBI.

Jim Long had three of Indiana’s eight hits in the second game.

Rock junior southpaw Steve Norris (Clearfield/Clearfield HS) struck out nine, walked one and scattered eight hits en route to his fifth win in as many decisions.

The Rock, which began the week ranked 14th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America national poll and 15th in the Collegiate Baseball magazine poll, hosts Millersville in a PSAC interdivisional doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday.
