ROCK WOMEN’S TENNIS TO HOST REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

SRU automatically qualified for the May 2-4 event

by winning the PSAC championship

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University learned on Thursday that it will host an NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships East Regional tournament the weekend of May 2-4.

The Rock earned an automatic berth to regional competition when it won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship last weekend in Bloomsburg.

The regional berth was the fourth straight earned by a Matt Meredith-coached Rock women’s team and the fifth in the 31-year history of SRU women’s tennis.

The Rock earned regional runner-up honors a year ago to culminate a 20-5 season, the best in school history.

SRU has compiled a 19-2 record this spring and is ranked first in the latest NCAA East Regional poll and 34th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II poll.

The Rock will open regional competition at noon on Friday, May 2, when it will take on Bentley College of Massachusetts (12-4) in a regional semifinal match at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 2.

Bentley was the Northeast-10 Conference regular season tri-champion last fall and does not play a spring schedule.

The other semifinal in Slippery Rock, set for noon on May 2, will pit Indiana U. of Pa. (10-4), which tied for third place in the PSAC tournament, against New York Athletic Conference champion Queens College of New York (7-1).

The winner of the May 2 semifinals will play in the regional championship match, which is set to start at noon on Saturday, May 3.

The regional champion advances to the Round of 16 of the national tournament, which will be played in Altamonte Springs, Fla., the weekend of May 8-11.

The Slippery Rock regional champion will play the winner of a North Central Regional hosted by Northwest Missouri State (20-5) in the Round of 16.

Bloomsburg (13-6), the PSAC runner-up and No. 2 ranked team in the East Region, will host the other East Regional tournament. The Huskies meet California U. of Pa. (12-8) in one semifinal, while Millersville (11-3), which tied with IUP for third place in the PSAC tournament, will meet Northeast-10 champion Stonehill (13-4).
