ROCK TRACK ROLLS WITH CARR QUALIFYING FOR NATIONALS

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University men’s javelin thrower Tony Carr (Turtle Creek/Woodland Hills) hit the NCAA automatic qualifying mark with a launch of 202 feet, 1 inch at the SRU Qualifier Meet on Wednesday.  The meet, designed to give athletes an extra chance to reach qualifying marks was a great success.

Junior Ben Steingrabe (Hermitage/West Middlesex) had an outstanding day on the track and in the field.  Steingrabe provisionally qualified for nationals with a long jump of 24 feet, 7.5 inches.  This was the first time all season that Steingrabe jumped for The Rock.  He also won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.86 seconds and anchored the winning 400-meter-relay team that clocked a time of 42.78 seconds.

Freshman hurdler Melissa Sopher (Slippery Rock/Slippery Rock) took first in the 400-meter-hurdles in a time of 1:03.51, good enough to provisionally qualify for nationals.  She hopes to join teammate Linsey Westerman (Freeport/Freeport) at nationals in the 400 hurdles.  Westerman did not run the 400 hurdles, but clocked an outstanding 25.80 seconds in the 200-meter dash and 14.52 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.

The pole vault was a strong event for The Rock.  Five Rock vaulters went 14 feet, 6 inches or better with Nick Wilpula (Mercer/Mercer) taking first with a 16 feet, 2.25 inch vault.  On the women’s side, Jen Mehall (Erie/McDowell) won with a vault of 10 feet, 6 inches.

Sophomore jumper Kristen Jones (Enola/Bible Baptist)was strong once again with a first place in the triple jump (36-7.5) and second place in the long jump (18-4).

The Rock women dominated the throwing events with Mackenzie Gurcak (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) winning the shot put and discus and Karyn McCready (Westmont Hilltop) taking the javelin.  Gurcak threw 42 feet, 9.5 inches in the shot put and 148 feet, 8 inches in the discus.  McCready tossed the javelin 156 feet, 1 inch.

The Rock’s next meet is Saturday, May 3 at Indiana, Pa.
